Ack! This thing says it's my birthday already!? Damn time keeper clocks. Anyway, today was a tad crazy. I'd better do this quick before I have to sneak off to bed.
I was not prepared *at all* for my mom's birthday. I was thinking of making her pancakes but we were going to church with my dad and would go out to eat breakfast. So while I was standing around before changing into my Sunday picked dress I tried to find some items that I wasn't using to give to my mom. I found a fancy card that I bought a long time ago just because I liked the image and it turned out to be a Happy Birthday card so I scribbled a quick little poem and stuck it in its elaborate matching envelope.
For a gift, I found a nail polish set that one of the religious ed elementary teachers gave me for Christmas as an appreciation present for helping her out with her class when I needed community service ours for Confirmation. I don't like to wear nail polish often and I never used the gift so I decided my mom would like it best. To finish off my 'last minute surprise' I put a little necklace/medal thing that Sister Elizabeth gave to me as a gift for an Epiphany party we had a few weeks ago. I stuck it in a little white drawstring pouch I had around in my jewelry case and tied it around a fake plastic light up rose that I bought from the carnival a long time ago.
And so, after waiting a while that my mom complained that no one was saying 'Happy Birthday' to her I finally presented her gifts. She was excited to bits about it.
I just kept on with the surprises for my mom this... that morning by writing out my mom's name that it was her birthday on Sunday's newspaper. Her name made front page headlines above the Columbia space shuttle incident. Which...seemed like a very odd juxtaposition. ( Oooh..big words...nobody ask me. I know what it means but don't ask me )
When we got to church...I gave my mom an even bigger surprise. I decided to help out Bridget with the Children's Liturgy of the Word so I missed half of the regular liturgy but after Bridget finished her homily thing to the kids we still had at least 10 minutes until the kids had to go to the actual church building for the rest of mass. I went to Sister Elizabeth's office to get some paper and markers for the kids to draw and when I got back to the room Bridget and the little ones began to sing Happy Birthday to me, which was very sweet. I just love those kids...as energetic as they are.
So we let the kids draw pictues and I drew a rose for my mom and Bridget drew a mountain/waterfall scene for me. We went into the church, and had communion. Before mass had started I asked Father Tom to make an announcement of my mom's birthday. So when communion was over, he made the announcements. He almost forgot to mention my mom's birthday and I felt disappointed until my savior, an elderly aussie man by the name of Ric who did the readings that morning, reminded Father Tom and he made the annoucement. Even though he pronounced my mom's last name wrong, everyone looked to her and clapped and sang Happy Birthday to her. I didn't get a chance to thank Ric.
Afterward, my mom explained how embarrassed she felt about what happened in church, but at least I made her feel appreciated. I guess I made my point. So then me, my mom and dad went to have breakfast, then went home. Shortly after we got home, we packed up blankets and a huge load of clothes to bring to the laundromat. We spent at least an hour and a half washing and drying clothes then went back home. Then I got Sara to come over and we had a nice lunch. Sara and I decided to make cupcakes using pancake batter mix and topping it with decorative icing. For our little surprise for my mom, we placed the decorated cupcakes in a circle on a paper plate and placed candles in each one and lit them. Ah my mom was very happy. We really gave her enough appreciation to last for a while. For me to make up for my mistakes and for neglecting her at times and not listening and doing what she says right away.
I feel like a ten-year old right now...just talking about the surprises I did. All in all, it was a pretty good day...except that there seemed to be too many surprises.
I saw Christina's name in the obituaries in today's newspaper. There's something for me.
So after my dad went to work, Sara stayed around to make a Happy B-day banner for me, as my mom planned on doing a small dinner thing for my birthday tomorrow.. today. Going to be doing a lot of cleaning. And so, I later went on to my Sunday evening class. My mom never wants to be left alone anymore because she fears Christina's spirit. Though I find that silly because there's nothing really to be scared of.
Back to my topic, I guess I made my mom's birthday more enjoyable than years before. I'm proud of that. I'm happy for her. And I love her dearly.
May the candle that I lit for her in church today have its fire burn eternally for her soul because she is my beloved one and only woman of my heart, mother.
And also...I pray for Christina.
